Okay so every festive season, Delhi does the same shortlist. Goa. Jaipur. Maybe Udaipur if someone wants a palace Reel. Cute. Also crowded. Also expensive the week you finally decide.
This year the quiet flex is Kinnaur. Hostel and backpacker data already has Sangla, Kalpa and Chitkul climbing like crazy for Oct to Dec. Three times last year’s bookings in some spots. South Delhi girl energy, but make it apple orchards and the Hindustan Tibet Road instead of Baga foam party.
This is not a fake weekend. Delhi to Chitkul is roughly 600 km one way. You need about 6 to 8 days if you want to breathe between drives. October is the sweet spot. Apples. Clear views. Still doable roads. November needs warmer clothes and a Chitkul backup plan.
Quick pick by mood
- Valley plus river: Sangla / Rakchham
- Last village flex: Chitkul
- Sunrise mountain face: Kalpa
- Temple stop on the way: Sarahan
- Supply town / base: Reckong Peo
How to reach from Delhi
There is no cute direct flight into Kinnaur. Accept it.
- Overnight bus: Delhi to Shimla Volvo, then Shimla or Rampur buses toward Reckong Peo / Sangla. Slowest, cheapest, most “I earned this trip.”
- Self drive: Delhi → Chandigarh → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Karcham. At Karcham you either peel into Sangla valley or continue toward Reckong Peo and Kalpa.
- Private cab: Softest if you are four people splitting. Expensive if you are two and dramatic about it.
Do not try Delhi to Chitkul in one heroic day. That is how friendships end on NH5.
Best simple itinerary (7 to 8 days)
- Day 1: Delhi to Narkanda or Shimla side. Sleep.
- Day 2: Toward Sarahan, then push to Sangla or Kalpa depending on daylight.
- Day 3 to 4: Sangla base. Chitkul as a morning trip or overnight if the road is open.
- Day 5 to 6: Kalpa for Kinner Kailash views. Roghi / village walks.
- Day 7 to 8: Return via Rampur and Narkanda with buffer.
If you only have 5 days, cut Sarahan lingering and pick either Sangla-Chitkul or Kalpa properly. Not both rushed.
1. Sarahan (the stop people skip and then regret)
Before the deep Kinnaur drama, Sarahan gives you Bhimakali Temple and a softer altitude step. Wooden stone temple energy. Good lunch or night halt if you are pacing like an adult.
Do: Temple visit properly. One viewpoint. Do not turn it into a full day unless you have time to burn.
Best for: Breaking the Delhi to Sangla death drive.
2. Sangla and Rakchham
Baspa valley. Apple orchards. River sound. This is where the trip starts feeling like Kinnaur and not just “another Himachal highway.” Sangla sits around 2,600 to 2,700 m. Rakchham is the quieter pine stretch toward Chitkul.
Do: Kamru Fort if you want a short climb. Riverside walks. Homestay food. One slow evening with no agenda.
Stay tip: Book Sangla as your Baspa base. Day trip Chitkul from here unless you are sure about weather.
Budget ballpark: Homestays often feel better value than Shimla tourist hotels. Roughly ₹1,500 to ₹4,000 a night is common for solid rooms, more for fancy orchard stays in peak weeks.
3. Chitkul (last village energy)
About 22 to 25 km beyond Sangla. Around 3,450 m. Last inhabited village feel on the Baspa side. Wooden houses. Mathi temple. River meadows. The road ends. That is the point.
Do: Go early. Walk the village before day trippers land. Carry a printed ID photocopy. Ask in Sangla the same morning if the road is open. Rain in Sangla can mean snow in Chitkul.
Don’t: Prepay a Chitkul night in late autumn or early winter without a backup in Sangla. Closures happen. Also do not expect empty wilderness in peak weekends. It is popular for a reason.
Best for: The photo you will actually keep. The quiet morning if you overnight.
4. Kalpa and Reckong Peo
Kalpa is the postcard. Kinner Kailash staring at you like it knows your AQI complaints. Reckong Peo is the practical town below for fuel, ATMs, supplies, and bus connections.
Do: Sunrise viewpoint. Narayan Nagini temple area. Hu Bu Lan Kar gompa vibe. One night is okay. Two nights is better if the mountain is playing hide and seek with clouds.
Stay tip: Sleep in Kalpa for the view. Use Reckong Peo for logistics.
Best for: Slow mornings. Couples. Anyone who came for mountains more than nightlife (there is no nightlife, accept it).
What it actually costs (2026 ballpark)
For a 7 to 8 day circuit from Delhi, people are landing roughly here:
- Budget backpacker mode (buses, simple rooms, local food): about ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 per person
- Self drive split four ways (fuel, tolls, mid stays): often around ₹12,000 to ₹18,000 per person
- Private cab comfort: can climb toward ₹18,000 to ₹30,000+ depending on car and hotels
October shoulder pricing is kinder than peak June. Festive weekends still surge. Book stays before you romanticise “we will find something.”
Permits and practical rules
- Indians: Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa circuit does not need some fancy inner line drama. Carry photo ID always.
- Foreign friends: Lower Kinnaur like Kalpa, Sangla, Chitkul is generally open. Upper Kinnaur toward Nako / Spiti side needs Protected Area Permit paperwork. Sort at Reckong Peo if you continue.
- Roads: Check NH5 and the Sangla to Chitkul branch on the morning you travel. They fail separately.
- Fuel: Fill at sensible stops. Do not play daredevil with an empty tank past Reckong Peo if you are exploring further.
- Cash and UPI: Both. Mountain wifi has moods.
- Clothes: Days can be soft in October. Nights are not. Thermals. Cap. Proper shoes.
Who this trip is for
- You have real leave, not a fake Friday.
- You can handle long mountain driving days.
- You want festive season without Goa speaker volume.
- Your group will not melt if the cafe menu is short.
If you need club night plus beach plus same day Indigo return, this is not your blog. Book Phuket. No judgment. Different sport.
Who should wait
- Motion sickness kings with no medicine.
- People who panic at narrow cliff roads.
- Anyone trying to “do Spiti plus Kinnaur plus Manali” in five days. That itinerary is a cry for help.
After you come back
Log the real trip on Jyurniq while your legs still remember the Sangla climb. Which homestay had the actual valley view. Whether Chitkul was open. What the Volvo really cost. The Kinnaur you lived is better than the Goa FOMO you muted.
Delhi will still be loud when you return. That is fine. At least once this festive season, go where the apple orchards are the point, not the afterparty.
Now pick your days, book Sangla and Kalpa first, keep Chitkul flexible. Soft bag. Hard yes to the mountains.
