Kinnaur: Sangla, Kalpa & Chitkul Valley Escape
Discover Himachal’s quiet Kinnaur circuit — apple orchards in Sangla, last-village Chitkul, and Kalpa’s sunrise views of Kinner Kailash before the crowds catch up.
About this trip
Trade the usual festive shortlist for Kinnaur — Sangla’s Baspa valley orchards, Chitkul’s last-village energy and Kalpa’s morning face of Kinner Kailash. This is a real mountain circuit on the Hindustan–Tibet Road, not a fake weekend: plan about a week if you want to breathe between drives. October is the sweet spot — apples, clearer views and still-doable roads. Inspired by our journal guide: Kinnaur Travel Guide: Sangla, Kalpa and Chitkul.
Travel plan:
Day 1 – Arrive Shimla / Narkanda side
Reach from Delhi or Chandigarh by overnight Volvo, self-drive or cab. Overnight on the Shimla–Narkanda side to break the climb.
Day 2 – Sarahan to Sangla
Stop at Sarahan for Bhimakali Temple — a softer altitude step people often skip and later regret. Continue via Rampur and Karcham into the Baspa valley. Overnight in Sangla.
Day 3 – Sangla and Rakchham
Explore Sangla’s orchards and riverside walks, optional Kamru Fort climb, and the quieter pine stretch toward Rakchham. Homestay evenings with no agenda.
Day 4 – Chitkul day trip or overnight
Drive the 22–25 km beyond Sangla to Chitkul (≈3,450 m). Walk the village and Mathi temple area early, before day-trippers. Overnight in Chitkul if the road is open, or return to Sangla as backup.
Day 5 – Kalpa and Reckong Peo
Cross toward Reckong Peo for supplies, then sleep in Kalpa for Kinner Kailash views. Sunset or sunrise viewpoint, Narayan Nagini temple area and village walks.
Day 6 – Kalpa morning and start return
Sunrise in Kalpa if clouds play nice. Begin the return via Rampur / Narkanda with daylight buffer.
Day 7 – Arrival / onward
Reach Shimla side or Delhi connections. Keep a soft buffer — NH5 and the Sangla–Chitkul branch can fail separately.

TipOctober is ideal; November needs warmer clothes and a Chitkul backup in Sangla. Do not attempt Delhi to Chitkul in one day. Indians: carry photo ID — no special inner-line permit for Sangla / Chitkul / Kalpa. Foreign travellers continuing toward Nako / Spiti need Protected Area Permit paperwork (often sorted at Reckong Peo). Fill fuel sensibly; check NH5 and the Sangla–Chitkul road the morning you travel.
NoteThe ₹27,999 starting price assumes twin-sharing accommodation. Delhi / Chandigarh buses or flights, meals not listed, temple offerings and personal expenses are excluded. Chitkul overnight depends on road and weather — Sangla is the flexible backup.
