The journey
My solo trip to Hampi was one of the most refreshing experiences I’ve had. With just a backpack and a rough itinerary, I set off to explore a place I had only seen in photographs. As soon as I reached Hampi, I was amazed by its unique landscape of giant boulders, ancient temples, and peaceful surroundings. It felt like stepping into another era.
Since it was my first visit, I decided not to rush through the attractions. Instead, I explored the town at my own pace, taking breaks whenever I found a scenic spot. Travelling alone gave me the freedom to change my plans, spend extra time wherever I wanted, and simply enjoy the journey without worrying about anyone else's schedule.
On the first day, I wandered through the historic ruins, admired centuries-old temples, and learned about the fascinating history of the Vijayanagara Empire. Walking through the ancient stone pathways made me imagine what this magnificent city must have looked like hundreds of years ago. Every monument had its own story, and every viewpoint offered a different perspective of Hampi.
The second day began early with a beautiful sunrise from Matanga Hill. The climb was absolutely worth it, as the golden light slowly spread across the ruins, rivers, and rocky landscapes below. It was one of the most peaceful mornings I have ever experienced. Later, I explored the quieter side of Hampi by crossing the river, relaxing at small cafés, and enjoying conversations with fellow travellers from different parts of the world.
One of the best parts of travelling solo was meeting new people along the way. Whether it was sharing travel stories at a café or getting recommendations from local shopkeepers, those small interactions made the journey feel even more memorable.
Although my trip lasted only two days, it gave me much more than a weekend getaway. Hampi taught me to slow down, appreciate history, enjoy solitude, and embrace the freedom that comes with solo travel. I left with a camera full of photographs, a mind full of stories, and a promise to return someday.
