Pune Visit Turned Into the Most Random Lonavala & Matheran Adventure

So this trip wasn't even supposed to happen.

I had actually gone to Pune to visit my uncle's place for a few days. The original plan was simple—spend time with family, eat home-cooked food, relax, and return. But then I thought... what's the point of being so close to Lonavala without actually going there?

One phone call later, my cousins were in. A few more calls, and some of my friends from Mumbai also decided to join. Somehow, within a day, our "quiet family visit" turned into a full-blown road trip.

We left early in the morning, and the drive itself felt like the vacation had already started. The weather couldn't have been better. Clouds everywhere, light rain every now and then, music playing in the background, and a car full of people who couldn't stop talking.

We spent the first two days in Lonavala, and honestly, I forgot why I had even come to Pune in the first place.

Every few kilometres someone would say, "Guys... stop the car!" because there was another beautiful viewpoint. At one point, we had so many unplanned stops that we completely lost track of time. Nobody cared though. The mountains looked unreal, especially with the monsoon mist covering them.

Of course, no Lonavala trip is complete without eating way too much. We somehow managed to stop for chai, bhutta, vada pav, Maggi, and fudge... all in the same day. I have absolutely no explanation for how we were still hungry.

The funniest part? We confidently trusted one cousin who claimed he knew a "shortcut" to avoid traffic. Forty-five minutes later, we found ourselves on a tiny village road with absolutely nobody around. Google Maps looked confused, we looked confused, and the only thing we could do was laugh. Safe to say, he's officially banned from giving directions on future trips.

On the third day, we headed to **Matheran**, and the vibe completely changed. No cars, no traffic, no constant honking—just fresh air, horses, little toy trains, and peaceful walking trails. It honestly felt like time had slowed down.

We spent hours simply walking around, talking about life, eating at small cafés, and enjoying the cool weather. It was one of those rare days where nobody was in a hurry to get anywhere.

The only difficult part of Matheran? Deciding whose turn it was to carry everyone's shopping bags after people suddenly discovered local handicrafts and chocolates.

Looking back, this trip perfectly proves that the best adventures are never planned. I went to Pune expecting a quiet family visit and came back with one of my favourite travel memories.

Sometimes all you need is one random idea, cousins who say "I'm in," friends who are always ready for a road trip, and a car with enough space for everyone's bags... and snacks.

Honestly, if every family visit turns into something like this, I don't think I'll ever complain about visiting relatives again.
