Somewhere Between Mangalore and Udupi, We Forgot to Check the Time 🌊

The journey

I went into this trip thinking Mangalore and Udupi would be a nice little coastal break.

Beaches, seafood, cafés, some pretty roads.

Simple.

What I didn't expect was to come back wondering why nobody talks about the Karnataka coast enough.

This trip was with my cousin Rhea and my friend Myra, which already meant one thing—there was absolutely no possibility of following an itinerary properly.

We reached Mangalore first, and almost immediately the trip started feeling different from our usual hill or city holidays. It was humid, slightly cloudy, ridiculously green, and there were coconut trees basically everywhere.

We spent our first day exploring Mangalore, stopping at local places for food and eventually making our way towards the coast.

And food became a VERY important part of this trip very quickly. 😭

Every few hours someone was hungry.

Or wanted coffee.

Or had found a place on Instagram that we apparently "couldn't leave Mangalore without trying."

At some point I stopped asking questions and just accepted that half our itinerary was going to be restaurants.

The next day we headed towards Udupi, and honestly, the drive was one of my favourite parts of the entire trip.

There was no hurry.

We had music playing, windows slightly down whenever the weather allowed it, coconut trees lining the roads and random glimpses of the sea appearing every now and then.

Every time we spotted a pretty stretch of road, someone would say:

"Can we stop here for literally two minutes?"

Two minutes never meant two minutes. 😂

Udupi itself had this really relaxed coastal vibe that I loved.

We visited Malpe Beach, walked around barefoot for what felt like forever and basically did nothing productive for an entire afternoon.

Which was perfect.

There was something about sitting beside the sea with Rhea and Myra, eating snacks and talking absolute nonsense that made me completely forget what time it was.

And that basically became the theme of this trip.

No rushing.

No trying to cover ten places before sunset.

Just... we'll go when we go.

One of the prettiest experiences was heading towards St. Mary's Island. The boat ride, blue water and those unusual rock formations made it feel completely different from the beaches we'd been exploring.

Naturally, the peaceful island experience lasted until we decided we needed pictures.

Then suddenly it became:

"Stand there."

"No, little left."

"Wait, hair."

"Again."

"One last."

There is NEVER one last picture. 😭

We also explored Kaup Beach, and I think that was the moment this trip really clicked for me.

The lighthouse, waves, cloudy sky and almost empty coastline looked ridiculously cinematic.

We stayed until evening just watching the sea and taking pictures.

Nobody really wanted to leave.

Another day we drove along the coast without much of a plan, stopping at smaller beaches and cafés whenever something looked interesting.

And honestly, that's exactly how coastal Karnataka should be explored.

Not with a checklist.

Just a car, a playlist and enough time to randomly stop.

One evening it started raining while we were near the beach.

Our first instinct was to run back towards the car.

Then we basically looked at each other like...

We're already wet.

So we stayed. 😂

Hair completely ruined.

Shoes full of sand.

Zero decent pictures afterwards.

But probably one of my favourite evenings.

By the final day, the three of us had developed a very simple routine:

Wake up.

Find coffee.

Drive somewhere pretty.

Find food.

Beach.

Find more food.

Repeat.

And honestly?

I wouldn't have changed anything.

Mangalore and Udupi weren't dramatic destinations where every five minutes something incredible happened.

They were better than that.

They gave us a few days where everything felt easy.

Long coastal roads.

Cloudy beaches.

Good food.

Random cafés.

And two people I could happily waste an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing with.

Sometimes that's exactly what a trip should be. 🌊🤍
