A family trip to Jaipur was never going to be a quiet one. My parents had been talking about the Pink City for months, and the long weekend of 2nd to 4th October finally gave us three days to actually go. We left with a loose plan, a shared bag of snacks, and the usual argument about who would sit by the window.

We reached Jaipur on the afternoon of the 2nd and went straight to Hawa Mahal. The facade looks familiar from photographs, but standing under it with the family is different. My mother stopped at almost every arch for one more picture. My father kept saying we would miss the light, then stood still for the next photo anyway. The autos around the square, the pink sandstone, and the late sun made the whole first evening feel slower than the journey that got us there.

The 3rd was the fort day. We went up to Amber Fort early, before the courtyards filled up, and walked through the palaces and the garden terraces without rushing. From there we came back into the old city for City Palace and Jantar Mantar. The giant instruments were the part everyone wanted to explain to everyone else. Lunch was pyaaz kachori and lassi, and nobody agreed on which shop was the right one, which is how you know a family trip is going well.

Johari Bazaar took the rest of the afternoon. We were not there to buy much, but we still came out with bangles, a block-print stole, and a story about a price that changed three times before my father laughed and paid it. The lanes were loud, warm, and exactly the kind of place you only enjoy when you are not trying to tick boxes.

On the morning of the 4th we drove up to Nahargarh for the view over the city, then spent the last hours the easy way: jal mahal from the road, one more round of dal baati churma, and a slow pack-up. Three days is short for Jaipur, but it was enough. The forts were grand, the food was better than the plan, and the photos are mostly of us looking at each other instead of the monuments.

I would take the family back. Next time I would keep the mornings for Amber and Nahargarh, and leave the bazaars for when nobody is hungry.

Three unhurried days is enough to fall for Jaipur with family.
