A Long Weekend Around Colombo

I booked this trip to Colombo because I wanted a long weekend somewhere close to the ocean, somewhere warm, and somewhere that wasn't packed with an endless list of tourist attractions I felt obligated to check off. I wasn't looking for a rushed vacation—I just wanted to slow down for a few days. Sri Lanka ended up being exactly what I needed.

Flying in from the US, Colombo immediately felt different. The city had this interesting mix of old colonial buildings, modern cafés, busy local markets, and the constant sound of the Indian Ocean in the background. It felt energetic without being overwhelming.

I checked into a hotel near the coast and decided not to over-plan anything. My goal was simple: good food, good coffee, long walks, and exploring wherever my curiosity took me.

Most mornings started with coffee overlooking the ocean before heading out to explore the city. I spent hours walking around Galle Face Green, watching families fly kites, locals playing cricket, and food vendors preparing everything from spicy street snacks to fresh seafood. It wasn't a tourist attraction in the traditional sense—it was just everyday life, and that's what made it memorable.

One afternoon I wandered through Pettah Market. The place was complete chaos in the best possible way. Tiny shops, colorful spices, electronics, fabrics, fresh fruit, and people moving in every direction. I probably got lost more than once, but honestly, that was half the fun. Every street seemed to lead to something unexpected.

I also visited Gangaramaya Temple, which was incredibly peaceful despite being in the middle of a busy city. After spending time in crowded markets, walking through the temple grounds felt like hitting a pause button.

Since it was a long weekend, I decided to get outside the city for a day. I drove down to Bentota, stopping at a few beaches along the way. The coastline was beautiful—golden sand, palm trees, and far fewer crowds than I expected. I spent most of the afternoon doing absolutely nothing except sitting by the water with a fresh coconut in one hand and a book in the other.

Another day I headed to Negombo before my flight home. The fishing boats, local cafés, and relaxed atmosphere made it a great way to wrap up the trip. It felt less like sightseeing and more like experiencing everyday coastal life.

Food deserves its own mention because I honestly don't think I had a bad meal the entire weekend. Fresh seafood, rice and curry, hoppers for breakfast, tropical fruit, and enough iced coffee to keep me going through the humid afternoons. Every restaurant seemed to have its own twist on traditional Sri Lankan dishes.

One funny moment happened on my first day when I confidently told my taxi driver that I'd "walk back to the hotel because it looked close on Google Maps." Forty-five minutes later, sweating in the Colombo humidity and completely lost, I admitted defeat and ordered another ride. Lesson learned: maps don't always tell the whole story.

By the end of the weekend, I realized Colombo wasn't trying to impress visitors with flashy attractions. It won me over with its people, its food, its coastline, and the feeling that life moves at its own comfortable pace.

Sometimes the best trips aren't about doing more—they're about slowing down enough to actually enjoy where you are.

I'd happily fly back for another long weekend without thinking twice.
