Prayagraj (Allahabad) is the Sangam before it is a city. Rivers meet, boats gather, and Magh or Kumbh seasons rewrite every plan. Away from the confluence you get Anand Bhavan, Khusro Bagh, churches, and parks that still remember another century.
This is a working map: Triveni Sangam and mela grounds, Allahabad Fort and Akshayavat, Lete Hanuman, Anand Bhavan, Khusro Bagh, All Saints and Company Garden, Chandra Shekhar Azad Park and Minto Park, museum hour, Shivkuti and Jhunsi, then Varanasi when you want a longer ghat day.
Boatmen at the Sangam will negotiate. Agree clearly. Sunrise is the clean hour.
How to read this city
Sangam core: Triveni Sangam, Magh/Kumbh grounds, Fort, Akshayavat, Lete Hanuman
Freedom & gardens: Anand Bhavan, Khusro Bagh, Company Garden, Azad Park, Minto Park
Soft stops: All Saints Cathedral, Allahabad Museum
Edges: Shivkuti, Jhunsi
Day trip: Varanasi
Where the rivers meet
Triveni Sangam
Confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and the unseen Saraswati in belief. Boats, morning light, and the reason Prayagraj sits on every pilgrimage map. Dip if that is your practice. Photograph if that is your mood. Respect both.
Do: Soft sunrise. Agree boat fare before you sit. Soft bag for wet clothes if you bathe.
Don’t: Leave phones loose on a rocking boat.

Magh Mela / Kumbh grounds
Seasonal city on the riverbank. Magh Mela is annual. Kumbh is rarer and overwhelming. Crowds, tents, and logistics that punish late improvisation.
Do: Go with a plan in mela season. Soft shoes. Meet-up points. Patience.
Don’t: Underestimate walking distances in the mela sprawl.

Allahabad Fort
Akbar-era riverside fort. Much of it remains under restricted or military use. Public access is limited to permitted sections and views. Check what is open before you romanticise a full fort tour.
Do: Soft afternoon exterior or permitted zones only. Follow security rules.

Akshayavat
Sacred banyan associated with the fort and pilgrimage lore. Access is tied to whatever fort or temple arrangements allow. Soft daylight. Quiet respect.
Do: Confirm current access. Keep the visit focused and calm.

Lete Hanuman Temple
Famous reclining Hanuman near the Sangam side, busy on Tuesdays and festivals. Modest dress. Soft morning is practical.
Do: Quiet feet. Pair with Sangam the same half-day.

Nehru home, Mughal garden, colonial stone
Anand Bhavan
Nehru family home turned museum, white facade, gardens, and Independence history in rooms. Ticketed. Soft morning or late afternoon.
Do: Pick key rooms. Read labels. Garden pause after.

Khusro Bagh
Mughal garden tombs, sandstone, and a quieter heritage hour than Sangam crowds. Soft daylight on the tombs photographs clean.
Do: Soft morning. Soft shoes. One garden loop.

All Saints Cathedral
Gothic church, stained glass, and a calmer sacred register. Soft daylight on the facade.
Do: Quiet feet inside. One exterior frame.

Company Garden / Alfred Park area
Colonial park belt for soft walks when river humidity wins. Pair with Chandra Shekhar Azad associations in the same green zone.
Do: Soft morning or evening. Soft shoes.

Chandra Shekhar Azad Park
Large park with freedom-struggle memory, lawns, and a civic soft stop.
Do: Soft afternoon walk. Keep expectations park, not palace.

Minto Park
Riverside monument park linked to colonial proclamation history. Soft evening light.
Do: Short stop. Pair with a river-side evening.

Allahabad Museum
Collections and a cooler indoor hour when heat or rain rewrites the Sangam plan. Check open days.
Do: Pick two galleries. Use it as a reset.

City edges and a longer ghat day
Shivkuti
Hillside temple belt with Ganga views, a quieter sacred outing than Sangam peak hours.
Do: Soft morning. Modest dress. Carry water.

Jhunsi
Riverbank side across the confluence story, temples and a different angle on the water. Soft afternoon.
Do: Combine with Sangam geography if you want both banks’ feel.

Day trip: Varanasi (~120 km)
Ghat city day from Prayagraj when you want the classic Ganga evening aarti. Full day with buffers. Leave early. Overnight Varanasi is kinder than a brutal same-day return.
Do: Soft morning travel. One ghat focus and evening aarti if timing holds.
Don’t: Stack full Sangam sunrise and full Varanasi aarti with no rest unless that is the point.

A practical way to spend 2-3 days
Day 1: Sangam sunrise boat. Lete Hanuman. Rest. Soft park evening.
Day 2: Anand Bhavan and Khusro Bagh. Cathedral or museum. Minto or Azad Park.
Day 3: Shivkuti or Jhunsi, or Varanasi day trip / overnight.
Food is also a place
Prayagraj eats between pilgrimage and university town habits. Simple thalis, chaat, and sweets near civil lines and Chowk. Build meals after the boat, not during the fare argument.
Before you go
Oct-March is kinder. Mela seasons need booking and crowd plans. Summer river light is harsh by 10 am.
Agree Sangam boat fares clearly. Prefer shared boats if solo budgeting.
Fort and Akshayavat access can be restricted. Confirm locally.
Modest dress at temples. Soft shoes for boats and ghats.
Varanasi needs a full-day buffer. Do not under-schedule it.
What to skip if time is tight
Not every park needs your Saturday. If you have one day, protect Sangam sunrise and Anand Bhavan or Khusro Bagh, then stop. If crowds win in mela season, keep the boat short and skip the full ground walk. If you came for ghats beyond the confluence, Varanasi overnight beats another hurried loop. Prayagraj is layered. You are allowed to leave layers for next time.
The best version of this city is not the longest list. It is the hour two river colours meet at soft light, the boatman going quiet, and tea after your clothes dry in the sun.
