Indore is a food city with Holkar stone underneath. Rajwada and Lal Bagh hold the royal face. Sarafa and Chappan hold the night. When you leave town, Mandu, Maheshwar, and Omkareshwar rewrite the trip.
This is a working map: Rajwada, Lal Bagh Palace, Khajrana and Annapurna, Kanch Mandir and Krishnapura Chhatris, Sarafa and Chappan, Patalpani and Tincha, Ralamandal, then Mandu, Maheshwar, and Omkareshwar as proper day outs.
Eat late if that is the point. Start forts and Mandu early.
How to read this city
Holkar core: Rajwada, Lal Bagh, Chhatris
Faith: Khajrana, Annapurna, Kanch Mandir
Food: Sarafa, Chappan Dukan
Near city: Patalpani, Tincha, Ralamandal
Day trips: Mandu, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar
Rajwada
Holkar palace face in the old city, lit at night, busy by day. Soft evening photographs clean. The square around it is half the experience.
Do: Soft evening. Walk the lanes. Keep bags closed in crowds.

Lal Bagh Palace
European-style Holkar mansion-museum, gardens, and a calmer heritage hour than Sarafa chaos.
Do: Soft morning. Pick key rooms. Garden pause after.

Krishnapura Chhatris
Cenotaphs by the river channel, strong evening silhouettes, short heritage stop.
Do: Soft evening light. Pair with Rajwada the same side of town.

Khajrana Ganesh
Major Ganesh temple, queues on Wednesdays and festivals. Modest dress. Soft morning.
Do: Quiet feet. Focused visit.

Annapurna Temple
Busy city temple stop, good to pair with a food evening rather than a fort day.
Do: Soft morning. Modest dress.

Kanch Mandir
Jain glass temple, mirror craft, short sharp visit. Soft daylight outside.
Do: Follow photography rules. Quiet feet.

Sarafa Bazaar
Night food street that defines Indore for many travellers. Come hungry. Come late. Share plates.
Do: Evening after 8. Try a few stalls. Keep expectations crowded and delicious.

Chappan Dukan
Another food spine, slightly different crowd energy from Sarafa. Useful second night or earlier evening.
Do: One focused food walk. Do not stack both streets into one stomach unless trained.

Patalpani
Waterfall and viewpoint outing near Indore, monsoon volume, slippery rock. Soft shoes with grip.
Do: Morning after rain season. Respect barriers.

Tincha Falls
Forest waterfall trek energy, better when there is water. Half-day with buffer.
Do: Soft shoes. Water. Only if fit for the walk.

Ralamandal
Green sanctuary hills for a soft nature hour without a full Mandu commitment.
Do: Soft morning. Carry water.

Mandu (~90 km)
Afghan-era ruins on the plateau: Jahaz Mahal, Roopmati, wide views. Full day. Soft morning light is kinder.
Do: Early exit. Two to three monuments done properly. Return with buffer.

Maheshwar (~90 km)
Narmada ghats, Ahilya fort, weaving. Softer sacred-river day than Mandu’s ruins.
Do: Soft sunrise or late afternoon on the ghats. Modest dress.

Omkareshwar (~140 km)
Jyotirlinga island in the Narmada, pilgrimage crowds, full day with buffers.
Do: Early start. Modest dress. Focused temple plan.

A practical way to spend 2-4 days
Day 1: Rajwada, Lal Bagh, Chhatris. Sarafa night.
Day 2: Khajrana, Kanch Mandir. Patalpani or Ralamandal. Chappan evening.
Day 3: Mandu.
Day 4: Maheshwar or Omkareshwar.
Food is also a place
Indore is the itinerary after dark. Poha-jalebi mornings, Sarafa nights, and arguments about the best chaat. Build meals on purpose.
Before you go
Oct-March is kind. Monsoon makes falls loud. Summer nights still work for food streets.
Autos in town. Cab days for Mandu, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar.
Modest dress at temples. Footwear rules apply.
Fall rocks get slippery. Grip shoes help.
What to skip if time is tight
If you have one day, protect Rajwada + Lal Bagh + Sarafa night, then stop. If you came for ruins, Mandu beats another mall. Indore is layered. You are allowed to leave layers for next time.
The best version of this city is warm street light on a shared plate at Sarafa, and Holkar stone quiet before the crowds thicken.
