Alleppey (Alappuzha) is Kerala’s water town. Canals before cafes. Houseboats before checklists. The backwaters are the reason people come, and the beach and temples are what fill the hours when you are not floating.
This is a working map: houseboats and village canoe rides, Kuttanad paddy country, Punnamada and snake-boat energy, Alappuzha Beach and the lighthouse, quieter Marari sand, Pathiramanal, temples around town, Krishnapuram and a short museum hour, plus Kumarakom when you want another Vembanad shore.
Book boats from people you trust. Midday on an open deck is bright and honest. Overnight beats a rushed two-hour tourist loop if you can spare the night.
How to read this place
Water first: houseboat, backwaters, village canoe, Kuttanad, Punnamada
Coast: Alappuzha Beach, lighthouse, Marari
Islands & lakes: Pathiramanal, Kumarakom
Faith & culture: Ambalappuzha, Mullackal, Mannarasala, snake boats
Soft stops: Krishnapuram Palace, Revi Karunakaran Museum
The backwaters are the point
Houseboat cruise
The classic Alleppey move: a kettuvallam on palm-lined canals, meals on deck, and a pace that finally matches Kerala humidity. Day cruise or overnight. Peak season books out. Quality varies wildly.
Do: Book a reputable boat. Soft morning start. One quiet stretch without forcing every village into a frame.
Don’t: Expect empty canals in December. Expect working water and other boats.

Backwaters & Vembanad edges
Open lake light, palm silhouettes, and the wider water that houseboats eventually find. Sunrise is kinder than noon glare. Binoculars help if birds are your mood.
Do: Soft morning. Sit without narrating. Let the boat do the route.

Village canoe ride
Narrow canals, thatched edges, and a smaller boat that fits where houseboats will not. Half-day village tours are the honest “how people live on water” version.
Do: Morning slot. Soft shoes. Tip fairly if a guide earns it.
Don’t: Treat doorsteps as a zoo exhibit.

Kuttanad
Below-sea-level paddy country, canals through fields, and the landscape that makes Alleppey feel like more than a jetty town. Best as a drive-and-boat combo, not a five-minute selfie stop.
Do: Soft afternoon light on the fields. Combine with a backwater stretch.

Punnamada Lake
Boat jetties, calm water, and the famous Nehru Trophy snake-boat venue. Even without race day, the lake edge explains why Alleppey owns Kerala’s boat story.
Do: Morning jetty walk. Pair with a short cruise if you are not doing overnight.

Snake boats
Long chundan vallams, practice sessions in season, and race-day electricity around Punnamada. Timing is seasonal. If you catch practice, stay respectful of the crews.
Do: Check local race or practice calendars. One shoreline viewpoint. Soft phone use.

Sea side of town
Alappuzha Beach
Pier, evening crowds, and Arabian Sea air when you need a break from canal humidity. Not a silent private cove. A town beach with opinions.
Do: Late afternoon into evening. Walk the pier if open. Keep valuables close.

Alappuzha Lighthouse
Coastal tower near the beach belt. Climb when open for a town-and-sea frame. Soft afternoon light helps. Short stop.
Do: Confirm entry timing. One climb or exterior look. Pair with the beach.

Marari Beach
Quieter sand north of Alleppey, palms, and a softer resort-village mood than the town pier. Good overnight base if you want beach sleep after a backwater day.
Do: Sunset walk. Soft swim only if conditions agree.
Don’t: Expect Fort Kochi cafe density. Expect quieter shore.

Pathiramanal Island
Small green island in Vembanad, birds, mangroves, and a boat hop from the Kumarakom-Alleppey water map. Morning is kinder for wildlife and heat.
Do: Soft morning boat. Quiet feet. Binoculars if you have them.

Temples and a palace hour
Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple
Famous for palpayasam and a living temple rhythm south of the main jetties. Modest dress. Footwear off. Go for the sacred stop, not only the sweet.
Do: Soft morning. Follow queue and dress rules. Keep phones low.

Mullackal Raja Rajeswari Temple
Town temple with festival energy in season and a shorter visit than Ambalappuzha for many travellers. Soft morning is practical.
Do: Modest dress. One focused visit between boat plans.

Mannarasala Temple
Serpent grove temple near Haripad, dense trees, and a different sacred texture from Krishna temples. Unique if you want Kerala faith beyond the postcard boat.
Do: Soft morning. Respect the grove. Pair with a south-side drive.

Krishnapuram Palace
Kerala mural palace near Kayamkulam, a short cultural stop when you need stone and pigment after too much water. Check open days.
Do: Look at the murals properly. Soft shoes. One courtyard pause.

Revi Karunakaran Museum
Ivory, crystal, and a cooler indoor hour in Alappuzha town. Useful when afternoon rain or heat wins.
Do: Pick two rooms. Use it as a reset between boat and beach.

Nearby: Kumarakom
Vembanad’s other famous shore, bird sanctuary mood, and resort quiet. Easy day link from Alleppey by road or water depending on your plan.
Do: Morning birds if that is your reason. Soft walk. Return before you invent a second overnight you did not book.

A practical way to spend 2-3 days
Day 1: Village canoe or short backwater cruise. Beach and lighthouse evening.
Day 2: Overnight houseboat, or full-day cruise plus Marari sunset.
Day 3: Ambalappuzha or Mannarasala morning. Pathiramanal or Kumarakom if you want more water and birds.
Food is also a place
Alleppey feeds you on the boat and in town. Karimeen pollichathu when the kitchen is honest, Kerala rice meals, toddy-shop energy if you know what you are ordering, and simple jetty snacks. Houseboat meals are part of the ticket. Still leave room for one town lunch that is not tourist-thali theatre.
Before you go
Nov-March is the kind dry window for cruises. Monsoon is lush, wet, and sometimes restricted on open water.
Book houseboats early in peak season. Read recent reviews. Cheap boats can be a regret.
Mosquitoes are real at dusk. Carry repellent for village and lake edges.
Modest dress at temples. Footwear rules apply.
Snake-boat race dates are seasonal. Confirm if that is your main reason to visit.
What to skip if time is tight
Not every canal needs your Saturday. If you have one day, protect a good backwater cruise and one beach hour, then stop. If budget is tight, a village canoe can beat a bad cheap houseboat. If temples are not your mood, skip the south-side loop without guilt and stay on the water. If you came for birds, Pathiramanal or Kumarakom beats another pier snack. Alleppey is layered. You are allowed to leave layers for next time.
The best version of this place is not the longest list. It is the hour mist lifts on a palm canal, the boat engine going quiet, and lunch arriving while the water keeps moving under you.
